Why Evergreens Are an Amazing Tree Species

Homeowners often look to plant trees to break up a monotonous landscape or to add privacy to an open backyard. There are many tree options for homeowners to plant in New Jersey. One of the most popular choices is evergreens. In addition to being an excellent option for privacy, they help prevent wind from hitting a house full force.

Evergreens are also known for retaining their foliage or needles year-round which helps add color to a backyard in the drab winter months. While evergreens are available in all states, it is important to understand the various types and in which climates each excels in order to pick the best option for your backyard landscape. We’ve put together some fun facts to help you with evergreen tree identification.

How many evergreens are there?

There are thousands of evergreen species, including conifer, palm trees, tropical hardwoods, broadleaf, and bushes. Conifer species account for more than 630 different evergreen tree options. Evergreens are used as more than just shade or privacy. While most commonly known as Christmas trees, they are also relied on for lumber, firewood, and even medicinal purposes.

Where can you find them?

Evergreens can be found on every continent, except for Antarctica. In the United States, they are most prevalent in the northern states with cooler temperatures, including New Jersey.

What are their physical characteristics?

When you first think of evergreens you might picture a Christmas tree, but not every species looks the same. Some species grow more than 300 feet tall! Evergreens have several different types of needles ranging from pine needles that grow in clusters, spruce needles that are short and stiff, to fir needles that are soft and flat.

In what types of conditions do they thrive?

The majority of evergreens require full sunlight to thrive. If your yard is prone to shade, there are still some possible options to choose from. Conifers do well in dry conditions, and many can even survive drought-like conditions. These trees can also handle the harsh cold temperatures of the north. Tropical hardwoods, on the other hand, need rain and warm temperatures to survive.

What type of care do evergreens require?

Even though evergreens are not as susceptible to weather elements as other tree types, they still require proper and adequate care. In their first few years, young trees should be watered every 10-14 days, making sure the soil is moist six inches deep. Mulching is essential, and evergreens should have two to four inches of mulch around the base of the tree to encourage growth and health. Dead branches should also be trimmed to prevent disease and decay. Trees should also be treated for pests and disease annually.
